From The General’s Human

The mouse between her and the fire held a long yellow pencil upright in both paws. Its pink eraser was planted in the earth, the metal collar dulled with dirt. The shaft rose far above his head, its paint worn to bare wood where he gripped it. At the upper end, a long taper of shaved wood narrowed to a black graphite point. Rain had darkened the grey fur along his shoulders. He shifted his paws along the shaft and lowered that point towards Cotton.

“Stay there, rabbit.”

“I’m looking for a boy. His name is Oliver. Have you seen him?”
